If the forecast is realized, with especially significant rain, there is the chance for high or blown trib flows. As we started getting into 90-100 we noticed a ton of bait and big fish on the bottom. A few leftover coho and browns are in the system too. Well have to wait and see how much they rise and open up and how much additional snow accumulations like in the Oak upper watershed get things rolling. Look for Kings steaming thru the downstream fast water to the dam, from the frog water areas thru the fast water, from the lower river to the frogwater, and from the near shore big Lake O waters to the rivermouth/lower river. Flows in the Oak are clearing slowly and hanging in somewhere between medium and slightly high. Starting Tues, Sept. 7th, the Orleans County Boat Launch at the end of Ontario Street (east side of the river) will be closed for reconstruction. Best spoon is a gold laser spook. A nice spate of water which is hanging on in the Oak and retreating in the other area smaller tribs back to the base Canal feed. Early silver fish like this are a good sign for the upcoming trib action. Water color will be on a slow mend. Follow them up from the Rivermouth, lower river, frog water, fast water stretches, Waterport dam. Pitch a retrieve and wait for the hard jolt! That should make for cleaner drifts, although with a late leaf fall, look for continued usually daily water level fluctuations thanks to hydro power operations. Those chances should only improve with cooler weather. Theres some brisk NE lakeshore winds that will make for some rough seas and cool and probably dirty water color. Through the past weekend and beginning part of this week, guys reported a few hook-ups by either working the holes, the dam, or swinging spawning staging spots. A couple anglers reported when flows came down thanks to turbine rack cleaning it revealed strong numbers of browns and some steelhead nearer the dam, even if they hadnt been good biters prior. Saturdays afternoon trip was one of the best weve seen. That amount of rain would definitely be a good thing. Theres a chance for more significant accumulations which could bring area totals to 2 3 ft of snow. Flows in the Oak are still slightly high and water color has improved with 2 ft of visibility. Walleye fishing has been good on the Niagara Bar. This area will be on the far end of it. Point Breeze/Orleans County/east side boat launch is still closed while construction is hopefully soon to wrap up. (Deadline for the Open was Monday, 6/7). Very good. With no real winter to come out of and trib and open lake water temps all on the warmer side, who knows for sure how the steelhead gods will play things out over the next couple months?!
